Force Line
Mixed media on watercolour paper, 6 × 8 in
Force Line is a kinetic, high-impact abstraction built from collision, compression, and directional energy. A dense black vertical and a weighty horizontal base establish a strong structural framework, while vivid red and ochre forms surge across the surface with immediate physical presence. The composition captures a moment of pressure and release — an instant where opposing forces meet, shift, and rebalance.
The contrast between scraped whites and heavier, gestural passages heightens the sense of motion, allowing the surface to remain active without becoming chaotic. Though compact in scale, Force Line carries a bold spatial charge and a pronounced sense of internal architecture, inviting the eye to move rapidly across intersecting tensions.
Created with mixed media on watercolour paper, this work represents the most physically expressive end of Susan Hunter Guise’s small-scale abstract language. It functions as a dynamic counterpoint to her quieter, more restrained structural and atmospheric works.
