Load Bearing
Acrylic on watercolour board 16 × 20 in
Awarded Honourable Mention – Teravarna International Juried Abstract Competition (2025)
Load Bearing is a bold structural abstraction that explores tension, compression, and spatial balance through a restrained contemporary language. Against a luminous white field, a powerful horizontal band of yellow is compressed by a dense vertical mass of black, blue, and warm ochres, while a fine black sweep carries the viewer’s eye across the surface. A single red square punctuates the open space, acting as a quiet counter-force within the composition.
This work draws on architectural concepts of pressure, support, and transfer of weight — not as literal structure, but as visual relationships. The contrast between stillness and motion, solidity and openness, creates a sustained visual tension that rewards long viewing. Gesture is present, but controlled; texture is layered, but never decorative.
Painted on rigid watercolour board for longevity and stability, Load Bearing represents a mature direction within Susan Hunter Guise’s abstract practice, where atmosphere and structure intersect. It functions both as a strong standalone statement and as a significant anchor within her larger abstract series.
