Memories of Tokyo
Acrylic on canvas artboard, 8 × 10 in
Awarded Honourable Mention – Teravarna International Juried Abstract Competition (2025
Memories of Tokyo is a lyrical mixed-media abstract that blends structure, colour, and fragmented mark-making into a quiet reflection on memory and place. Soft fields of yellow and turquoise are intersected by layered linear gestures and traces of script, suggesting fleeting impressions rather than fixed narratives. The composition balances openness with subtle visual density, allowing the eye to move slowly across shifting planes of colour and line.
Rather than describing a literal scene, the work evokes the emotional residue of experience — the way memory distills sensation into fragments, rhythms, and colour relationships. The contrast between the fluid ground and the more deliberate graphic marks creates a gentle tension between motion and pause.
Painted on rigid canvas artboard for stability and longevity, Memories of Tokyo offers a more intimate, narrative-inflected counterpoint to the larger structural works in Susan Hunter Guise’s abstract series. It functions both as a standalone contemplative piece and as a meaningful bridge between atmosphere and structure within her broader abstract practice.
