Signal Bend
Acrylic on watercolour paper, 8 × 10 in
Signal Bend is an expressive abstract built from movement, resistance, and layered directional force. A sweeping blue passage drives diagonally through a dense gold field, interrupted by a dark vertical form that alters the path of motion and redirects the eye across the surface. A small red point acts as a distant pressure marker, creating a quiet counterbalance within the broader flow.
Through successive layers and selective wipe-away, the surface holds visible traces of change and revision, allowing the sense of movement to feel embedded rather than applied. The contrast between atmospheric passages and firmer gestural marks creates depth without sacrificing immediacy, giving the composition both momentum and weight.
Created using mixed media on watercolour paper, this work belongs to Susan Hunter Guise’s Expressive Abstracts series, where gesture, colour, and spatial resistance guide the structure of each piece.
